IT in teaching

PC use at Skt. Josef’s School

All students in Years 5 to 11 are required to bring their own laptop PC to school.

Please observe the following guidelines when purchasing a laptop and the necessary software for school use. Briefly our requirements are:

  • Screen size: 13.3 – 15.6”
  • Operating system: Windows 8
  • Office package: Microsoft Office 2013 ProPlus
  • Accessory: Headset with microphone

These recommendations are described in greater detail below.

Choice of PC

We recommend a solid PC, able to withstand the daily transport to and from school. It is not necessary for students to bring a very powerful games computer; an ordinary standard laptop of the type often on sale at reduced prices is quite sufficient for school work. The screen should be about 13-15 inches.

To access the school network, the computer must have wireless connectivity of the g/n type.

Apple computers do not meet school requirements

The school IT setup is based on PC standards and Microsoft Windows, and our staff are trained to teach work with Windows-based PCs. Computers or tablets with other operating systems, such as Apple, Linux, Android or the limited Windows RT version cannot replace a Windows PC in teaching.

Previously we offered a workaround where we installed Windows on a partition of the hard drive on an Apple computer. This means that some current students have received approval for the use of such a computer. And of course they can still use this in the rest of the computer's lifetime. However, when they buy a new computer it has to be a PC with Windows according to the requirements.

Free Windows 10 Education for all students

The school offers all students a free upgrade to Windows 10 Education. Windows 10 Education is designed for students, workplace ready. With more features than Home or Pro, Windows 10 Education is Microsoft's most robust version - and you can download it at no cost on sktjosef.onthehub.com. As soon as you are enrolled, you can use your school e-mail username and password to log on. The format of your school username is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , e.g. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , and the password is the one you use with unilogin. Please  be aware that the free Windows 10 Education will continue to function after you have left Skt. Josef’s School.

Office package

Our students can install the large office package, Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus Open for Students, free of charge and use it as long as they are enrolled as students at Skt. Josef’s School. You can download it from portal.office.com with the credentials mentioned above.

The PC must also be equipped with antivirus software. We recommend Microsoft Defender which is included with Windows 10.

At the beginning of the school year we will also allow students to install the software that we use on the school Smartboards. The student should therefore be permitted to install programmes on the PC, i.e. have administrator rights.

Accessories

In several subjects the students work on audiovisual productions. Students should therefore have access to a headset with microphone.

It should be emphasised that an expensive headset of the type used for gaming is not necessary.

Insurance

Please note that the school does not provide insurance coverage for student PCs. All students in Years 5-11 are given the opportunity at the beginning of the school year to rent a lockable cupboard through Elevskab.dk, and we recommend that PC’s are kept here when not in use. Students in Years 4 and 5 can keep their PCs in a lockable joint cupboard when they are not being used. In the case of damage to or theft of student PCs, coverage must be provided by parents’ insurance.

Please note that in special cases it is possible to borrow a school laptop on application to the school management.

We are working systematically with IT in education so that all our students can strengthen their skills. And of course we do it, as we approach any other teaching assignment: We work with a progression plan that outlines the skills and competencies that students must acquire from grade 0 to grade 11.

In recent years, we have ensured that the preconditions for using IT in education is in place at Skt. Josef’s School. All students on the upper and intermediate level bring their personal computer, and we have ITC workplaces for the younger students. We have ensured that everyone has access to a wide range of digital teaching materials via the school network. Last but not least, all teachers use a computer as their personal tool.
